Henceforth We Shall Saunter
John Muir on the word 'hike': “I don’t like either the word or the thing. People ought to saunter in the mountains — not hike! Do you know the origin of that word ‘saunter?’ It’s a beautiful word. Away back in the Middle Ages people used to go on pilgrimages to the Holy Land, and when people in the villages through which they passed asked where they were going, they would reply, “A la sainte terre,’ ‘To the Holy Land.’ And so they became known as sainte-terre-ers or saunterers. Now these mountains are our Holy Land, and we ought to saunter through them reverently, not ‘hike’ through them.”
John Muir's sensibilities have influenced me.

Sculpting the Garden Path
Much fun working on the garden path this year was driving to Voss Acres at Copalis Crossing for top soil on a day the forests were resplendent with every shade of green under the solid blue sky. I then cut through the forest on Copalis Beach Road to come out on SR 109 to visit the new Copalis Beach Grocery. Then continued on to Ivan's at Ocean City. Ivan had the right outdoor table for the deck. It was a first-ever North Beach neighborhood shopping spree.
2 bdr. 1.5 bath. Sleeps 1-6. ROOM TO WORK/PLAY/CREATE. Excellent kitchen, garden seating, south forest-facing deck & views. WALK TO BEACH, pool, parks, shops. Garden seating & the echo of waves crashing. HQ for WA Coast road trips. Pet-free.

April Showers Bring May Flowers
A day of digging, envisioning, planting, and tidying the garden is good therapy. Planted parsley, sage, lavender, and pineapple mint to go with the oregano and chives in the culinary garden. To The Garden!

Shedding Routines for Fun and Sanity
This year's birthday sabbatical held many 'firsts' apart from the routines of the pack-for-days-away beach road trips and nature retreat. That felt good. Like when you take a new route to- or from- work, or bus instead of drive, or get a gelato to eat on the beach.
Created a lounging bed of the sofa bed.
Took a beach chair (there are two in the closet at Daydream Cottage) and a beach towel (there are five in the powder room at Daydream Cottage ... to the beach! Read a book. Took a nap. Felt warm summer breezes. Watched kite-flying.
Walked across Joe Creek into Pacific Beach! Met a local lady who shared her memories of the 1964 tsunami in Grays Harbor which followed the great Alaska earthquake. Found that the info about that event has been removed in the Pacific Beach State Park bulletin board.
A first because Frontager's Pizza Co. is now open: gelato by the ocean 🎵🎶 (think DNCE) gelato by the ocean 🎵🎶 .

June Solstice Magic
Drove to Ocean Shores to pursue a vision for the garden: a new chair and new planting. I reset the majority of these stepping stones and planted the new red tickseed, purple salvia, and chive. Then the tiny hummingbirds visited!

It was winter 2015: intermittent deluges. No one was on the beach but me and someone intrepidly taking photos who seemed to walk right through the churning, flowing water at Elk Creek. I took copious photos of the photog with camera stand and two stately dogs. Posted one to FB. Quickly learned that it was Teri Pieper! She and I met years ago in Winthrop, WA. She was at Winthrop Gallery exhibiting photos she had taken at the very same beach. Then, she hospitably asked me to join a dinner party at the Old Schoolhouse Brewery with her and the locals. It was a hot summer, and we sat out on the deck that hangs over the Chewuch River listening to live bands. It was the same Methow Valley trip where I acquired Henri, the glass bird who lives on the deck at Daydream Cottage. What a fond memory. Teri loves The Sandpiper and clamming. This winter she was staying at The Sandpiper. I was at Daydream Cottage. Weather warnings and fact that my time at the beach was up prevented us from getting together. Moving Experiments, Leaving Monterey
My
camera went kaput so I dug out its rickety predecessor with the
taped-shut battery latch. That one was unusable, so cell phone camera it was, for my biggest trip in years, returning to my true home California, seeing old friends.
Turns out the cell phone camera has a funny way of taking pictures while moving: creating lines
and shapes. All so fun!

Milk Paint Adventure
While in Eastsound on Orcas Island, I found Smith & Speed Mercantile where they sold Milk Paint, a new and interesting water-based medium that I'd use again. I chose marigold, snow white, and soldier blue.
Maybe Smith or Speed said it was a kind of old fashioned paint that would work on outdoor chairs, to weather with more color. We're talking weather: sea gales and driving rain on occasion or steeped in sun.

Gnome Trail Advisory on Plastics
Trendsetter Franklin Gehrgnome designed the new neighbors' abode on the Gnome Trail to the Beach. He recanted his use of plastic for the guest house in the latest issue of Gnome Home after locals stormed the ribbon cutting, chanting "plastic is deadly to fish and birds!" The plastic guest house mysteriously disappeared soon after the event. Gnomes hope that it did not slide into the creek and out to sea. The gnomes living in these woods have long had a special affinity for using all natural materials and zero waste. Caucuses are taking place now to amend the Gnome Code to ban all plastics at the beach. Up to now, there was no need for a law. But times have changed, and gnomes are resilient. These are green gnomes caring for their neighboring Sea, the greal Blue. Travelers on the Gnome Trail are advised to please be creative using only material from the forest and compostables to create marvelous abodes for the Seabrook gnomes.

When the geese are migrating northbound, it's just right to stop in your

hard work, flying from Mexico to Canada. When great flocks of sandpipers are
foraging at the waterline, busier than you need to be all day, just slow down
and pay attention to the rhythms of nature. That's what it's all about.

Walking Meditation at the Beach
Morning writing produced the imperative to walk to Pacific Beach one day. Saturday afternoon, these kites were invisible in the distance. Seabrook to Pacific Beach is a one mile walk on the beach. This day, glimmering ocean waves and flocking birds posed. Transient red, green and pink purple melted into the horizon. Then, magnificent kites emerged in their entirety. On foot, I sank into deep sand soufflé where Joe Creek meets the Ocean. Not a cloud in the sky, this day in February 2015. It was a luscious day.
There's no place like home.
